Life is What You Make It

Life is what you make it.

Will you do what you love or follow the path of least resistance?

I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. I could have become an Elementary Teacher, gone back to school to get a Master’s degree, have kids, and be a teacher until I retired. But, I didn’t and I won’t. My passion is not in teaching young kids and kids don’t deserve me as their teacher if my heart isn’t in it. It would have been easier to get a job as an Elementary teacher than to start over and try to find my passion. After graduating, I worked with kids as an early preschool teacher and as a ski instructor. After ski instructing I told myself that I wouldn’t get another job working with kids.

It is easy to get sucked into something even if you don’t love what you do. It may be scary to leave a job because you may not have another job. People may think that you are crazy for leaving a job without having another job (especially in these economic times). Life is too short to do something you hate. So, if you are in a situation you do not like, get out of it.

It is a process to find your passion in life. You may have many jobs until you find the one that fits you. Many people may think you are a failure if you keep trying new jobs and then quitting. My feelings are that at least you tried and found out that the job wasn’t for you.

I have learned more about myself when I am not in school or employed. You have time to think. You have time to read and research. I learned about veganism after quitting my job as an early preschool teacher. Becoming vegan was the best decision of my life. I am currently unemployed and I am learning more about my passion in photography, traveling, and raw veganism. Living a life that you want to lead is more important than keeping up with your peers in terms of career. It is important that you don’t compare yourself to anyone. It is okay to be different and to not follow traditions.

Have you ever looked at Craigslist or another job listing site and nothing sounds appealing? That happens to me all the time. I get discouraged. Sometimes we take a job that doesn’t sound appealing but we need a job to pay for rent, food, etc. You should only do this if you need a job for money. However, if you have money saved up you have bought yourself some time. Really think about what you want to do. Create goals for yourself and get it done! It’s easier said than done. I have been telling myself for a while that I need to do a career search and shadow people for the day. Have I done that? No. So, I definitely need to work on that. But, nothing changes unless you do something about it. Again, life is what you make it!

What does success mean to you? Many people would say that you are successful if you make a lot of money. I define it as what you have actually accomplished. Have you helped others? Have you lived up to your potential? You define whether or not you are successful.

Don’t feel like you need to live your life according to your family’s expectations. It is your life. Do what makes you happy. Create the person you want to become and create the life you want to live. There are many opportunities. Decide what you want to do and do it!
